Clinical Description: A cognenital condition characterized by moderate to severe mental retardation, upward slanting eyes usually with epicanthic folds, a short broad skull, broad hands, decreased muscle tone and by trisomy of the human chromosome number 21
Symptoms:
-Facial Features: up-slant of the outer corners of the eyes, small nose with a flat nasal bridge, a flat profile, and a large grooved tounge
-Mental retardation (varying degrees from mild to moderate)
-Hypotonia (Low muscle tone)
Life Expectancy: 55 years (can live up to around 70 years old)
Occurrence: 1 out of 691 live births (Most common)
Treatment: Down Syndrome cannot be cured by any medicine. But there are therapies for speech, emotional, and physical limitations. Sometimes surgery is necessary when a heart defect is present
