Major Leaders in Abolition/Emancipation Reform
Major Leaders
There were several leaders of the abolition movement including William Lloyd Garrison (at left). Garrison was a white radical abolitionist who started his own paper,"The Liberator", in 1831. He founded the New England Anti-Slavery Society in 1832. A second leader was David Walker. He was a free black who wanted blacks to fight for their own freedom. He wrote "Appeal to the Colored Citizens of the World". A third strong leader was Frederick Douglass. He was a black man who escaped slavery, educated himself and became a free man working in the North. He started a newspaper, "The North Star", named after the star that led many slaves to freedom.
