Female Leaders in the Abolition Movement
Women Leaders in Abolition
There were many women leaders who helped influence the abolition of slavery. Two of these women, Sarah and Angelina Grimke from South Carolina, were the daughters of a slave owner who spoke openly against slavery. Angelina even published a document, "An Appeal to Christian Woman of the South", asking women to stand up against the horrors of slavery. Many others raised signatures to present to Congress, gave out literature, and raised money. A third women abolitionist is Sojourner Truth. She is a former slave from NY who lectured about the need to abolish slavery.
