Abolition & Emancipation Reform
Abolitionists Speak Out
In the early 1800s, more than 100 antislavery societies were trying to abolish the resettlement of blacks to Africa. Most blacks called the U.S. their home and did not want to go to Africa. Many abolitionists began writing about the emancipation of slaves. By the mid-1850s, almost 500,000 slaves were free and began entering society. After some time where they mainly had only low paying jobs, blacks started becoming successful in society.
