The wealthy leader of Philadelphia's black community, James Forten, took an active role in a variety of political causes. Forten went to sea to fight for independence but was captured by the British and refused passage to England. In 1830 Forten became a wealthy sailmaker and argued the fact that free blacks should not return to Africa.
