Up until the 1820s, American girls had few opportunities to expand their education after elementary school since they were expected to stay in the house to cook and clean. Emma Willard soon opened one if the most prestigious schools for women in 1821. This institution was called the Troy Female Seminary which became the model for developing schools for women. Oberlin College in Ohio became the first coed college in 1837.
