Congress shall make no law...abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press...’” (From the Bill of Rights, the First Amendment passed in 1791) (76).

The Sedition Act

The men leading the country did not respect the rights of the people. Rights that were meant to be permanent were revoked for the benefit of those in power.

Fearing revolutions from immigrants, the (first) Adams administration passed the sedition act, which made it illegal to speak or write anything against the government, the President or Congress (76). The Sedition Act took away the people's freedom of speech. It "violate[d] the First Amendment" (76).
