When he returned, Da Gama was thought to be a hero in Portugal, but a tyrant in Africa. He advised the king on matters in India. He was named the count of the city Vidigueira in 1519.

That king died in 1521, and his 19-year-old son took over reign. He sent Da Gama to India in 1524 to try and patch up their relationship.
