Vassals were lesser Lord who were granted land in exchange for loyalty and service to a greater lord. This exchange of pledges was known as the feudal contract. LOYALTY was extemely important for this exchange of pledges to work. The lesser lords got fiefs in return. The size of the fief varied depending on who The Lord pledged service. (Part of the 5% for knights)
