Soccer is the most popular sports in the Republic of Congo. The Congolese football Federation was founded in 1962 and became soon became accredited by the International Federation of Football Association (FIFA). The National Soccer Team is nicknamed “Les Diables Rouges,” (The Red Devils). In 1965, the Congolese national soccer team won the African games tournament and won their first African Cup of Nations in 1972 held in Yaounde, Cameroon, marking a landmark in Congolese sports history. Besides soccer, other sports such as basketball, handball and volleyball are also popular. Popular NBA and Oklahoma City Thunder basketball player, Serge Ibaka, is a symbol of basketball pride for the Congolese nation.
