Albinism Overview
-Albinism is a defect of melanin production due to the absence or defect of tyrosinase, a copper-containing enzyme, that results in little or no color (pigment) in the skin, hair, and eyes.
-Melanin is a natural substance that gives pigment to hair, skin, and the iris of the eye. It is produced by cells in the skin called melanocytes. It also helps protect our skin from the sun.
-Albinism has been found in everything that breathes including every type of fish, amphibian, reptile, bird, mammal, and plant.
