Vassals

Vassals were lesser lords that pledged service and loyalty to a greater lord. This exchange of pledges was known as the feudal contract. In return for their loyalty and military service, the lords granted the vassals fiefs. The size of the fief and the amount of slaves with it depended on what lords the vassal was pledged to.
