Asylum/ Prison Reform
Asylums and prisons were the same thing. Even if you were mentally ill you would be put in prison with criminals. Dorothea Dix was horrified by this. In 1843 she sent her findings to the Massachusetts legislature. They made a law aimed to improve conditions. She persuaded southern states to set up public hospitals for mentally ill patients.
