IN ABSENCE
EDMUND CLARKE home: rose suspended in solution Clarke is drawn to motifs that allude to transience and the passage of time. For those detained without trial – for indeterminate sentence – the symbolism of a decaying flower can be rich in meaning
FRESH EYES
MOLLY CRABAPPLE On journalism...."they don’t really write about what the experience of covering it is like. And I felt like that could be my contribution, that I wasn’t taking myself out of it like a traditional journalist would, but rather I was trying to bring the reader there with me so that the reader would understand what it felt like to be in Guantanamo."
EMPATHY
SHUMON AHMED The story of Guantanamo Bay’s prison camp is as a horrifying one. In this place of torture, people became guinea pigs in a vast experiment of methods to crack the human soul. Mubarak Hussain Bin Abul Hashem is the only Bangladeshi to have returned from Guantanamo, after five years of imprisonment. © Shumon Ahmed
Other art making
AFGHAN WOMEN From the more than 50 years of conflict and military intervention in Afghanistan has emerged a surprising textile phenomenon—war rugs. A mash-up of centuries-old techniques and modern symbols of war that include AK-47 assault rifles and artillery tanks, these complex, visually stunning rugs are woven by Afghan women and were originally marketed to visiting troops.
