Serfs

Lord's estate

The Feudal Mannor

The heart of the feudal economy was the Feudal Mannor. Most manors included one or more villages and the surrounding land. Peasants made up the majority of the population and lived and worked there. Most of these peasants were serfs.

Serfs were peasants bound to the land. They were not slaves but they were not free. They has to ask The Lord for permission to marry. They had to pay The Lord a fee when they inherited their father's land.Serfs and their lords were tied together by mutual obligation. The peasants were bound to the lord's land. They worked the land for The Lord and in turn could farm some of the land for themselves.
