1849
January 11,1849 Elizabeth Blackwell became the first women to earn a medical degree in the United States, graduating at the top of her class. On November 4, 1849, she was treating an infant with ophthalmia neonatorum, she spurted some contaminated solution in to her eye accidentally, and contracted the infection. She lost sight on her left eye and thus lost all hope of becoming a surgeon.
