The Sixties and Beyond

July 20, 1969

The people of the world see the first picture of the world.

In 1969, as part of the Apollo 11 mission, Neil Armstrong became the very first man to ever land on the moon, followed only minutes later by Buzz Aldrin. Their accomplishment placed the United States ahead of the Soviets in the Space Race and gave people around the world the hope of future space exploration. Neil Armstrong climbed down a ladder and became the first person to set foot on the moon. Armstrong stated, "That's one small step for man, one giant leap for mankind."

The first photograph of the earth.
