Matthew was a publican/ tax collector before he became an apostle, he was well educated and knew how to read and write. He had money and a small position of authority.

Mark was a teenager when Jesus was in Jerusalem, his mother was an active follower of Jesus. After Jesus' death, he sought out the apostle Paul and traveled with him. He also stayed with he was in prison.
