- In 1875 a man named Henry Cavendish discovered the noble gases, also known as the rare gases
- The elements in the noble gases group are helium, neon, argon, krypton, xenon, and radon.
- Their name came from the fact that the elements are very unreactive and very "noble" above the other members of the periodic table
- Since they are unreactive they are also known as inert gases (inert meaning inactive).
