De La Hoya was named The Ring Magazine's "Fighter of the Year" in 1995 and also was the the top-rated "Pound for Pound Fighter" in the world in 1997 and 1998.

In 1992, he competed in the summer olympics in Barcelona, Spain. He defeated Marco Rudolph of Germany to win the gold, and got the nickname "The Golden Boy."
