Daily essentials
Our lives are chaos. Our ancient bodies and minds are mismatched with the modern environment. We’ve got a million things to do, our schedules are always changing and we seem to have no time for anything. To keep healthy, we need some daily reference points that we can rely on. So keep it simple. Do the following once each day and let the rest of your life take care of itself…
One round of authentic physical effort
Strength, endurance, dance, yoga; the details don’t matter. Challenge your body, get your breathing going and feel the effects.
One superb meal
Carefully prepared vegetables, protein and healthy fats. Real food that tastes great and nourishes your body and spirit.
One period of flow and concentration
Full engagement in a task. Work or hobby. Sustained attention and concentrated effort.
One contact with the natural world
Outdoor experience and exposure to sunlight and weather. Contact with habitat, dirt, plants and animals.
One period of quiet reflection
Meditation or contemplation. Observe your breath. Relinquish attachment. Relax your body and mind.
One authentic social experience
Listen to others and enjoy their company face-to-face. Complete engagement in conversation and relationship.
One spark of curiosity
Engage your sense of wonder. Ask deeper questions about life and the universe. Learn something new about the world.
One reflection on your meaning and purpose
What are you doing in the world? What’s your path? Why risk your life?
One gratitude and appreciation
Reflect on the good things that have come your way. Give thanks for the beauty in your life and the people who help make it possible.
One great sleep
Eat and drink early, taper your cognitive activity in the evening hours. Turn out the blue lights (electronics) early. Make your room as dark and quiet as possible. Value sleep.
