The Authors of the Gospels

The Gospel of Matthew was written in AD 80 by a Jewish scribe who had a thorough knowledge of Palestine and Jewish customs. However, not a lot is known about him.

John

Luke

Mark

Matthew

John is guessed to have been written around AD 95 by the apostle John, although historians are unsure. John himself was one of the original apostles, and of the twelve, he was the only one to die of old age.

The Gospel of Mark was written by Peter, although it was most likely written down by Peter's interpreter or secretary around AD 67-73 as he was teaching. Peter, one of the original twelve apostles, was among the first to be called and was present for the majority of Jesus's sermons. Later, after Jesus's death, he became a prominent church leader and the first pope.

The Gospel of Luke was written by a Gentile Christian named Luke around AD 75-90. He was a prominent apostle and possibly born a slave. He is also known for his writing of the Acts of the Apostles, and both writings are some of the most extensive accounts of the life of Jesus.
