Feudalism

Knights lived in the land owned by the Nobles. In order to live on that land they had provide military service for the king whenever he needed it. Knights kept as much of the land as they wanted for their personal use, then they would sell it to serfs. They were also there to protect the land from attacks. Chivalry was the code of conduct for knights during the Middle Ages.
