The doors finally open.
After the war the women of Western Australia redoubled their efforts in demanding change to the status of woman, In 1920 legalisation was finally passed to remove any legal impediment to a woman standing for parliament. The following year five women including Edith,contested seats in the Westerns Australian election for the first time. 60 year old Edith Cowan won the seat of West Perth, she became the first woman member of any Australian Parliament and the second in any parliament in the British Empire.
