During the years of World War 1, Cowan worked with the Red Cross, although she was a
Ready heavily involved in social welfare, she threw herself into war work. She collected clothing, food and various items that could comfort to the men at the front. For her effort during these difficult years she was awarded the Order of the British Empire in 1920.
