The temperance movement is the effort to stop the drinking of alcohol. In the early 1800's, alcohol was used all the time. Liquor helped wash down the salted meat and fish. Doctors dosed their patients with whiskey or brandy before operating. Many Americans recognized drunkness as a problem. In 1826 American Temperance Society was founded and 6,000 local societies came about.
