The number of slaves almost doubled between the years of 1810 and 1830. Most slaves worked on small farms.Rural slavery: men, women, and children worked from morning to dusk each day. Most slaves lived on plantations or large farms but many lived on small farms, working beside their owner. Urban slavery: many slaves now worked in mills and lumber areas. Slaves were now in demand at southern cities. Men, women, and children went from plantations to factories. Slaves never lost sight of their freedom.
