Mary spoke at a temperance meeting in 1852, explaining the evils of alcohol. She explained that a woman can act in no better way than not drinking alcohol. She also said that a woman who is married to a drunkard is hopeless and lives miserably because of the evils alcohol causes.

Lyman Beecher
Realizing drunkness was a problem, Lyman Beecher, a prominent Connecticut minister, began to lecture against the use of alcohol in 1825. Lyman inspired people to create an American Temporance Society in 1826.
