This book contains multiple characters. Each one being a Hutu who participated in the killings during the Rwanda genocide of 1994. Ten men were interviewed by the author to let the reader have insight to how the milers saw the genocide.
The ten men interviewed were; Joseph-Désiré Bitero, Léopord Twagirayezu, Élie Mizinge, Fulgence Bunani, Pio Mutungirehe, Alphonse Hitiyaremye, Jean-Baptist Murangira, Ignace Rukiramacumu, Pancrace Hakizamungli, and Adalbert Munzigura.
The ten men Hatzfeld decided to interview fir this book had been friends since they were young children. They stuck together even during what they called their genocidal "job". Each one had their own opinion about their job during the genocide and each point of view was expressed in this book.
