~The Gupta Empire, also known as "The Golden Age", emerged in 320 AD and declined in 550 AD.
~The empire was greatly effected by Hinduism.
~They had a strong central government that allowed local leaders to have power. Each village had a headman or council that made decisions. They even let the women serve on the council for a short period of time.
~The culture or society of the empire was influenced by the caste system which allowed for a stable society.
~For the people in the Gupta Empire, the village was the center of life.
~Wealthier families lived in joint families and Indian families were patriarchal. The children inherited the family trade and worked in the fields. Their marriages were arranged by their parents because Hindu law required you to marry within your caste.

~The Gupta Empire was an environment of peace and success that allowed scientific and artistic achievements it flourish.
~Their education took place in religious institutions.
~They developed the concept of zero, the decimal system, and a system of writing numerals that we use today, also known as Arabic numerals.
~They used herbs to treat illnesses, were able to perform plastic surgery on the face, and vaccinated people against small pox 1,000 years before the actual practice ever began in Europe.
