Physicists, Leo Szilard and Albert Einstein, drafted a letter warning that the Nazis were using an element that would construct "extremely powerful bombs". Worried, President Roosevelt set up the Manhattan Project, a secret American program to build an atomic bomb that employed over 120,000 Americans. The first break through of the program was when the world's first nuclear reactor was built at the University of Chicago.
