Causes

Hippocrates made the first known reference to PPD in the 4th century B.C. A hypothesis that survived over 1,000 years.

Trotula, a 13th century female physician, believed postpartum mental disturbances were due to increased moisture in the body following childbirth. She wrote " If the womb is too moist, mother brain is filled with water, & the moisture running over the eyes, compels the. To involuntarily shed tears."

~ Physical changes- A dramatic drop in your hormones after childbirth could attribute to Postpartum. Other hormones produced by your thyroid gland may drop, leaving you feeling depressed, sluggish, or tired. Fatigue & mood swings could be caused by changes in your blood volume, blood pressure, immune system, & metabolism.

Hippocrates proposed lochial discharge, the fluid that comes from the uterus after birth, if suppressed, could flow to the head & result in agitation, delirium & attacks of mania.

~ Emotional Factors- Being overwhelmed & sleep deprived can cause problems for handling minor issues. Might feel loss of control over life.
