Physical traits

Amur tigers can be recognized by their striped fur. Similar to people’s fingerprints, no two tigers have the same stripes. Amur tigers are different from other tigers because they have fewer paler stripes, and they also have manes. The mane, in addition to their thick fur, helps keep them warm.

The Amur tiger averages about 11 ft. in length. Adult male tigers can weigh up to 700 lb., while female tigers are smaller, weighing up to 400 lb. On average, Amur tigers are about three feet tall.

Life expectancy

The oldest Siberian tigers in zoos have lived to 35 years of age, but 14 years is the oldest known age for an Amur tiger in the wild.
