The man credited with making the next form of the pencil, the wood encased pencil, was William Monroe, a Concord, Massachusetts cabinet maker. Early American pencils were made from Eastern red cedar wood. This splinter-resistant wood could be found in Tennessee and other parts of south eastern states. This happened in 1812.
