Trade

Even though the Aztecs didn't own much farm land, they controlled a decent amount of trade. They gained money for crops and luxury resources such as gems and rare foods. Since the merchants dealt with the people in the empire, the emperors hired them as spies to report trouble in the empire. This and a few other things made the Aztecs one of the richest empires to live in the early 1500's.
