The way that Alan and Joe tricked Billy was by bringing him to a baseball game then making him eat a lot of food then he would fall asleep and forget that he had to eat the last worm. Joe thought he won the bet because he made billy fall asleep. Joe and Alan felt good because the thought they won the bet.
