Today we would consider the majority of people in Palestine to be "lower class." They lived in one-room houses made of baked clay that were divided in half where the animals lived in one half and humans in the other. Mats were rolled out on the floor in the evening with a piece or wood or stone as a pillow. Although houses did not contain a stove, each village had at least one communal stove.
