SUMARÓKOFF (1718-1777), who wrote a number of tragedies and comedies. He played an important part in the development of the Russian drama. In his tragedies he imitated Racine and Voltaire. He was very found of monologues for his characters. Several of his tragedies were taken from Russian history. He made all of his characters feel very real to the audience which is something they have never experienced before.
