In the 19th century immigrants began flooding America's cities. Immigrants left their poor lives behind seeking a better life. Single family dwellings were divided into multiple living spaces. Tenement buildings were narrow low rising apartment buildings. They were horrible living conditions with garbage piling up and no indoor plumbing like we have today.
