Matthew was most likely written by a Jewish scribe who had thorough knowledge of Palestine and Jewish customs. Luke, the author of the Gospel of Luke, was a Gentile Christian. The Gospel of Mark may have been written by Peter's interpreter. It is unsure if the author of John wrote the gospel before John the Baptist's arrest or after the other 3 gospels were written as a spiritual gospel and not a historical one. If this is true, then the author was not an eyewitness to the events.

Who were they written by?
