The main conflict in the story is when August is in public. People just stare at him because of his facial deformity. Some think he got it from a fire, but he got it since he was born. Doctors found out two months later about his face. August had many surgeries but doesn't change who he looks like.

The significant conflict started when August got mean notes in his locker, along with his friend, Jack. Julian told his mom to talk to the school board and check his folder about him. But then Julian and Jack got into a fight. Later on, many people started believing in August in a good way! He became a great student in the school.
