Marie Jose's story

She had 10 children, 6 died. Her husband and two children were killed in the 1994 genocide, and the other children were fell Ill.

Marie Jose was born in Butare, Rwanda in 1959.

She made bags out of rope, but found that they were not very durable. In 1996, someone at a plastic company connected Marie Jose to a woman there, who then brought Marie in to weave bags out of plastic strips.
