Indian cooking is very unique. Most indian cuisine uses a lot of vegetables. In the rural parts of India, you can't just go to McDonalds and get a cheeseburger. You either grow your own food or go to the market where you can buy a wide variety of ingredients. This ties into the Life of Pi because whenever Pi is stranded on the raft, he has to rely on making all of his own food from scratch and catching it.
