Mary White Ovington was concerned about race relations, and organized a national conference in 1909. This was founding of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP)
By 1914, the NAACP had over 50 branches, 6,000 members, and it's magazine "Crisis" reached over 30,000 readers. This organization worked mainly through courts.
In the early 1900, benefits for African-Americans skyrockted. During this time, blacks were getting an education too, publishing, literary, and making ground breaking studies.
Black business were appearing everywhere. To help them out, Brooker T. Washington founded the National Negro Business League in 1920. Madam C. J. Walker started a beauty business thats exploded. She then encouraged other African-American women to be the change.
