Fiber is not an essential nutrient for the first 6 months of life, but as new foods are introduced fiber is needed to assist in digestion. Fresh fruits and whole grains should be encouraged. Protein is important because it will fuel the active child’s body with the energy it needs, and can be obtained from foods like eggs, meats, and beans. The body needs carbs, fats, and sodium, so snacks like cakes, cookies, and chips should be eaten in moderation to avoid weight problems.
