INTRODUCTION
Ritual- a series of actions or type of behavior regularly and invariably followed by someone.
Slogan- A phrase used repeatedly, as in advertising or promotion
Songs, slogans and rituals were used in the book to spark the initial rebellion, but were also corrupted to match Napolean's ideals. Napolean would take a slogan and use it as long as possible to show that his rule still matched the rebellion and to proclaim how great of a ruler he was, but once they stopped serving that purpose, he would either add words, change them or completely ban the saying. When a saying was in place it would work to unify the farm, creating a pride in who they see and a sense of shared goals. As long as a saying still appeared to work towards that goal, it would be a form of brain washing for the animals, but as soon as it stopped working towards a purpose other farms animals besides pigs wanted for the farm, the slogan could provide a rude awakening.
Cognitive dissonance theory suggests that we have an inner drive to hold all our attitudes and beliefs in harmony and avoid disharmony (or dissonance). This theory starts from the idea that we seek consistency in our beliefs and attitudes in any situation where two cognitions are inconsistent. For the ideas such as the name change, a slogan leads to further trusting and brain control, until a change goes too far.
