The Aztec society was a highly complex society the developed in Central Mexico.
The society was based around the independent city state, altepetl, composed of smaller divisions (calpulli), which were again one or more extended kinship groups.
Society depended on strict divisions between nobles and free commoners, both of which were themselves divided into elaborate hierarchies of social status, responsibilities and power.
The Aztec government got its structure and units of society that existed long before the empire was founded.
The family unit was the base structure of society.
After the family, the basic unit was the calpulli.
