The Lottery - Theme
I believe that the theme of this story was : Regardless as to whether or not we like it, things happen that we have no control over, however we are continually walking right into those things ; blissfully unaware, we could be next on the list for misfortune. To live, or to die. "'I think we aught to start over,' Mrs. Hutchinson said, as quietly as she could 'You didnt give him time enough to choose. Everybody saw that." (Pg. 4 Towards End) Weather or not Tessie liked it, her family had been chosen to do the second drawing from the black box.
The lottery is a game of chance that the townspeople in that story were obviously expected to participate in, meaning nobody was safe from the cruel hand of chance. You'd suppose that a family could back out or run away, but for whatever reason (beliefs, tradition, law) they were obligated to take part."'They say,' Mr. Adams said to Old Man Warner, who stood next to him, 'that over in the north village they're talking of giving up the lottery.'" In response to this, "Old Man Warner snorted. 'Pack of crazy fools,' he said. 'Listening to the young folks, nothing's good enough for them. Next thing you know they'll be wanting to go back to living in caves, nobody work anymore, live that way for a while.'" (Pg. 3 Last Paragraph) This indicates to me that the older people think that by doing the lottery, they are somehow advancing themselves further; like advancing from caves to villages, etc.
