He is a dictator

The Great Depression and reparations from WWI were hurting Germany economically. Many people turned to more radical forms of government, like Communism and the Nazi Party, to try and fix the economic problems. Hitler promised to overturn the Treaty of Versailles, which gained him much support. Hitler was a great speaker, and gained some political power. Many people truly thought that he was going to be a savior for Germany, which at the time had over 6 million people unemployed and living in poverty.
Adolf Hitler was appointed chancellor of Germany on January 30, 1933, bringing an end to German democracy. Guided by racist and authoritarian ideas, the Nazis abolished basic freedoms. He persuaded his Cabinet to declare a state of emergency and end individual freedoms, including freedom of press, speech, and assembly. Individuals lost the right to privacy, which meant that officials could read people's mail, listen in on telephone conversations, and search private homes without a warrant.

Hitler, knowing that Germany was going to lose the war, committed suicide on April 30, 1945. Germany surrendered to the Allies a few days later, paving the way for American occupation. The damage done by Hitler's regime were staggering: over 6 million Jews had been killed and another 700,000 displaced. An estimated 2-3 million Soviets had been killed, as well as hundreds of thousands from other groups: gypsies, homosexuals, and the disabled.
