Catherine Helen spence was an author, teacher, journalist, politician and a leading suffragist born in Melrose Scotland on the 31st October 1825 she was born into a family of 8 children. she was the 5th of 8 children.She died in Norwood South Australia on the 3rd April 1910 she was holding her beloved niece Lucy Morices hand.That happened on Queen Street. she was buried at St Jude's Brighton Cemetery.
was 85 years old when she died. On her eightieth birthday, Catherine Helen Spence was put on the Australian 5 dollar note but now queen Elizabeth is on the five dollar note. Also on Catherine Helen Spence's eightieth birthday she was named "Greatest Australian Woman" by Miles Franklin.
